C.O.N.F.L.I.C.T & Story Telling

C.O.N.F.L.I.C.T is a book written by the Author Robert Thirkell and published back in 2014, he guides people through what it takes to create a good story in Factual/Reality TV and Film. He goes into great depth of how he gives the information all separated by subtitles with names such as People Skills and Twist and surprise. The first one to catch my eye was ambition he goes to talk about Jamies School dinners and how you need to drive to make something great at the beginning so it can be successful in the future, this was a good example because of them creating this show they were able to change school dinners all over the country. I then started to read about how I can go about getting into contact with people to be in my story, relating this to my project I have emailed people asking for their stories about drug abuse so that I can get more of an idea what my story can be. For actors, I have been in contact with a local Theatre and I have a young actor to play in my 3-minute pilot, as Thirkell would say you have to ‘jump at any opportunity’ and also that it can take time to find the right person so don’t jump at the first person that gets back to you.

Going more into depth about my story as he talks about how every fairytale needs a hero, so, within my story, the young boy that is battling the drug problem would be my hero  because he is going through hurdles even when it gets tougher to try and succeeds, Thirkell says this is what is needed to create a going hero. He also makes a really going point when he says that ‘the audience see the end before they start’, my understanding of this is that they may know that ending but by using misleading content they could be led to believe something else.

Something that I have heard before is that the first 2-minutes of a show are the make it or break it point if I haven’t given the audience something to make them carry on I could lose their interest. The point that he made was to introduce them to the hero at the beginning so they can get an idea of how the show is going to go.

A very simple but right to mention would be who is my film about? I need to make sure I tell my story so that the audience know and make sure that I don’t have too many stories, for my show I would be using a minimum of 5 characters in the whole 5 minutes.

When it comes to the production of the show I need to keep in mind that as a producers/ director I need people skills, so I keep people happy and make sure that it all runs smoothly, when I am creating my pilot I need it all to run smoothly by being on time make sure I know what has to be done. As well as this when I am on location things can change and I need to keep that in mind if I were to change I need to edit in my head that the story still makes sense.

Once Upon a Time…

Once upon a Time in a land not very far away, there lived a young boy called Jack and his parents that always fought. He would hide away and wonder what he had done so wrong, blaming himself for the shouting. He grew older and older and the shouting got louder and louder, he started to notice that his Father would disappear for a long period time maybe a day, even a week. His Mother was stressed and then one day he walked in and his Father was lead there knocked out called and tablets on the floor and alcohol dribbling down the olf rotting couch. He rushed around not knowing what to do, nobody else around and only aged 10, he rang 999 and his Father was taken away in the ambulance leave little Jack all on his own.

This was one of many times that Jack had to save his Father, as he grew older this seemed light second nature to him until one night when Jack came home there was an ambulance outside he ran in, his Mother was there bawling on the couch. As he ran outside to see if his Father was alright and he saw was a body bag being lifted into the ambulance. Jack drops to the floor not knowing how to handle this situation.

Jack then felt lonely like he had no one, his Mother to traumatized stayed in bed all day. He turned to the only thing that he knew, drugs. He got worse and worse to the point that he couldn’t even stand to be in his own house anymore, he ran away with no one and no were go he only had the option of living on the street. Jack was now at his worst and didn’t know what to do with himself, then one day as he lite a cigarette sat on a street corner he was hit by a puddle drenching him from head to toe, as he was shouting at the car he turned and looked at his appearance and it even made him flinch because it reminded him of someone…. his Father. Something clicked in his brain, this isn’t what I want, I want a family a life. With only one person in the world left he know where he needed to be, home. He ran and ran until he reached his home the light was on just how he left and in the corner of his eye he saw his Mother. He ran to her, gripped her and said he would never leave again.

And they lived happily ever after…….

Desert Island Discs – Jack Whitehall

Screen Shot 2018-03-15 at 18.26.49

Desert Island Discs follows the well-known comedian and actor Jack Whitehall as we listen to him talk about his life, with stories and music that he was chosen to go with the stories (IMDB, 2018). This show is aired on BBC Radio 4, the demographic seems to fall under the ages 30 and over (BBC Trust, 2018). I think they put it here because people of the younger generation don’t really enjoy sitting and listening to peoples life stories, however, the old generation seems to enjoy to hear the backstories of people especially when they are currently in the limelight today.

When listening to the show and keeping in mind the idea of copyright a few things came to mind. The first of course was how doe it work when the radio studio play other peoples music, after looking I found that they use something called Radio Royalties. So the radio studio pays the songwriter, not the artist, so when Jack had picked the songs the songwriter was get paid (Songtrust, 2014). Another thing that I focused on was the fact that Jack creates his own content so he technically copyrights all of his own content, for example, he co-wrote Bad Education and Fresh Meat so any material in the will be under the copyright law. Also, when he does his stand up shows and they are recorded and put onto Netflix, they will then have a deal that makes sure they cant be shown anywhere else because that would be classed as copyright.

By listening to this show it has really expanded my knowledge of how far the copyright law can go, from films to shows you have to be very careful to what you put, where it’s going and who it is going to effect in the long run.

Back in Time for Tea- Copyright & Clearence

Screen Shot 2018-03-14 at 17.09.40.png

Back in Time for Tea follow a family from Bradford that goes through the decades over 100 years and sees what it was living in each decade. This was shown on BBC Two, this seems like the perfect place for this documentary because of their demographic which falls under ages between 20-30-year-olds. By keeping with products and music that generations today know they are keeping them entertained and also in a way teaching them what it was like living in the times and how hard it must have been (Slideshare, 2008).

Having all of those different products and music advertised the producers must have had to work around the copyright issues. Back in 1988, a law was made called The Copyright, Designs, and Patents Act, within this it made sure that ‘creators of literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works the right to control the ways in which their material may be used’ (Copyright Service, 2017). During the program Back in Time for Tea, for example, there was one scene where they played a track from the 80’s, after doing a little research I found out that any music that is played has to be authorized by the creator and usually paid a sum of money for the use of it (Copyright Service, 2017). However, after around 50-70 years after the music has been released, there is a chance that you can use the recording without the trouble of the copyright law (Techcrunch, 2007).  Something quite similar and kept popping up all through this show is product placement, throughout the show businesses like Mcain and Walls were there for the audience to see, this is in a way opposite to copyright because the companies would have to pay the show for the advertisement however, they still have to be really careful (BBC Copyright Aware, 2018) .

After looking into depth about the different types of way that copyright can be used for sound recording, films and even broadcast I know to watch out whenever I am wanting to use some as the main focus as my peace or even using it as background music.

The Archivist- Location

Screen Shot 2018-03-05 at 20.11.15.png

The Archivist is a radio drama broadcasted on BBC Radio 4 at the beginning of this year. It is about a couple going through their life at the start we see them going through the normal things like proposals, marriages, and babies, however, through the 45 minute episode Ben (the male in the relationship) becomes more and more obsessed with filming things and capturing them in that one moment so that they never forget. Then as the episode carries on he becomes more obsessed and it sounds like he has Social Media Anxiety Disorder, posting things online and needing the reassurance of the audiences. He then goes too far and puts CTV camera in the house with his family and watches every minute, when his wife finds out he is thrown out however he keeps one camera and says it is just to keep an eye on them (EPA, 2017).

This is a very impressive radio drama and kept me on my toes the entire time, knowing that this is a scripted radio drama we know that a lot of it is filmed it the studio. However, this doesn’t change that the location has to be key, the sounds that they use to keep the audience interested and make sure that we know where they are and what they are doing. This is a great example because he is filming they are in multiple different places, for example on scene was set in the park where the child fell of the roundabout so this would include the children in the background, squicking of the swings, the roundabout and when all these are together they are able to simulate the sound of a children’s park. Just to keep in mind that this was just one of the scenes, researchers must have had to go to all of these places and just listened to see what they could hear and then recreate it in the studio or even gone on location and recorded it there. By doing just little tweaks and really thinking about the location of the shoot it will increase the production value and make people want to listen more.

After listening to this in future projects when I look at radio I am going to make sure that I think about all of the things that are needed just to set the scene because without the scene people listening will not know what is going on.

Blue Planet 2- Location

Screen Shot 2018-03-05 at 12.42.33

Blue Planet in one of the most popular TV documentaries known today, it seems to attract people no matter their age group(The Guardian, 2017). It was broadcasted on BBC One last year and I feel that fits well here because they don’t really have a certain demographic, they like to say that they construct a wide range of high-quality programs that reflect the whole UK in its output, meaning they cater to everyone’s needs and broadcast the things people want to see (BBC Trust, 2018). It was so popular that when it was aired they reached an outstanding 10.3 million views, beating Strictly Come Dancing and X-Factor that weekend (The Telegraph, 2017).

However what makes this show so popular especially in this day an age where people are into their drama series and anything that has a little bit of action. One thing has to be David Attenborough who is just a treasure to this nation and who can make anything sound intriguing and make you want to listen more. But the main thing that I think is vital is the location, this is a key thing that makes the program, without this it would just be a man talking about the ocean. The thought and the process the team working for BBC must have had to go through must have been intense, they are exploring a place that has never been touched. They must have had to send people around the world scouting and getting multiple recces before they knew the right place to film. Then the patients that they must have as cameramen, producers, and even editors must have to go through the shots, however, when they get one good sequence it must feel terrific. For example, I watched one were multiple sharks were eating a rotting whale and it may sound awful I felt like it really gave the show a character and gave me something that I didn’t have before. Also, no matter how much camera equipment or special techniques they have by capturing that one moment can really raise the production value because the research has given them something that nobody else has seen (The Sun, 2018).

Watching Blue Planet has really opened my mind to the different locations that I can find if I were to look a little further. Also that the location can tell the audience a story without even saying a word which I will take into count when thinking about my assignment.

The Archers

Screen Shot 2018-02-25 at 18.42.35.png

The Archers are one of the worlds longest running soap operas, broadcasted nationwide on the 1st January 1950. It has aired over 18,500 episodes since and is still going strong with listeners around the world (Independent, 2011). It has been aired on BBC Radio 4 and their demographic usually falls around ages 50 and above, this is the perfect place for Archers because around the time that this came out is around the age of the people listening, so it does hold a strong sentimental value to them (BBC Radio 4, 2017).

Within each 12 minute segment we get to follow a family in their day to day life, in the episode I listened to it was about the grandparents losing their cattle, this may not seem entertaining to the younger audience but the older audience members seem to love it meaning it has gone on for so long. However, the hard work and thought that must have gone into each and every episode, from thinking about the different sound effect for the background to casting the voice actors so that they sound like they live in the Midlands and own a farm. Within the episode that I listened to there were multiple different sounds from a child playing with his toys to the kettle boiling, by doing this they are keeping the audience interested and making them feel like they are in a way part of the family, as well as that they were able to keep the tone of the whole program very upbeat

After I looked through a couple of articles, I did come across one that talks about is being similar it Emmerdale, they take the whole essence on The Archers and add a lot more drama and you have the TV equivalent to The Archers (The Telegraph 2012).

Line of Duty

Screen Shot 2018-02-23 at 18.31.40.png

Line of duty was previously aired on BBC One and when looking they don’t seem to have certain demographic, they are said to be the most popular mixed-genre television service that offers a wide variety of high content (BBC Trust, 2014). This offers BBC one to play a wide option of content and feel that Line of Duty fits well here because it is something that is different and experimental. It was that popular that Netflix and Amazon both now have it for people to watch.

This show isnt just a typical crime drama of someone dying and then the police finding out who and how they have done it and flipped it on its head, we get to see the other side of it, what it’s like if one of the police officers were being inspected for varies crimes. After just watching one episode I can see why it has been so popular, they aren’t just moving onto their 5th series, during their last show aired they count an amazing 7.5 million viewers (The Guardian, 2017). I feel that they have topped such a high viewing rate because it is so different, people are so used to the normal crime drama that when they watched this talking about the corruption of the police force they need to know the end. In one article I read they talk about so much happening in one episode they can’t help but watch the rest ( Independent, 2017). The tone of the program comes across as very dark and mysterious which every good crime drama needs, however, they do need to be careful because just in the first episode they do go into subjects like sexism and racism which is touchy in any program.

Looking for a crime drama that is similar to Line of Duty is next to impossible, there are plenty of crime dramas out there but this is different. So I started looking at a series called White Chapel this was aired on ITV however it does follow the idea of looking at a crime drama in a different way. In each episode, there is a different murder, however, the style of murder would be similar to someone from the past, for example in one episode someone followed the style of Jack the Ripper. This enticed the audience because they could know what was going to happen before it was going to happen.

Leave a Light on- Research

Too began my journey into creating this short drama based on the song Leave a Light on, I had to think of the things that I was going to need to accomplish this. To create a drama a huge part of it is research, whether that is primary or secondary. The first thing I want to look at it the bases around the song and why did the artist create it in the first place.

Tom Walker was born in Glasgow but grew up in Manchester, the song seems to represent a story of him losing a friend and how he will always be there for him.  After reading an article it turns out that he had lost family members at the time so they were both in a really bad place at the time. Now knowing a little more about the back story I can have a look at the different stories and groups that are to do with drug abuse and see how they help people, see if I can see are talk to people that have gone through real-life stories and maybe that is what my drama can be based on.

I have had a look at a lot of different places types media, including Newsstand, Social Media and googling many different blogs about the cause. However, I did start on Facebook where I found many different groups connected to drug abuse, so I started emailing them and even rang people despite having phone fear. I am still waiting for the people through email to reply. I did, however, ring a couple of different groups and people, after getting a few rejections and a lot of people not answering there was one group that told me that they were there to help parents that deal with their children being addicted to drugs/alcohol. So it is similar to a support group where mums that have dealt with their children being addicted to drugs, alcohol ext. come together and talk to others that have experienced the same. They were not able to release any personal information but they gave to some information that made me think that I want to base my short drama on something to do with children being addicted to drugs and give off the message that family is always there for you like Tom Walker was there for his friend.

A Mix-Tape for Gus

Screen Shot 2018-02-08 at 14.46.21.png

A mix-tape for Gus has beautifully produced radio tribute to Gus who passed away after an accident. Through Gus’s life he recorded songs for his sister on mixtapes and after he passed she didn’t know what to do with them, so this radio show goes through the tapes with her and one of his friends from school they talk about some of the interesting stories that Gus had through his life (Emilylevy, 2014). A mix-tape for Gus was first aired on BBC Radio 4 back in 2014 on the 7th October to their audience who they said where a little older, this was due to the content looking to ‘inform, educate and entertain’ (BBCTrust, 2016). When listening to the show you really get a sense of nostalgia and like this is a way of her saying a final goodbye to her brother, this is also another reason it could connect with the older audience because they have probably experienced a similar loss. The tone of the whole show, however, is very happy and cheery and one thing that she said that really made me think was “Music holds Memories”, so it is like with each song that she plays there is a different story behind it. As well as them telling stories about his life they also play the mixtapes that he mad in the background, this really helps to connect the audience with the show and get a sense of who Gus was like as a person.

However, if I were to flip it on its head and look at their intended audience they do say that they are aiming to educate and inform (BBCTrust, 2016), the tribute maybe lovely but they are cutting off a large part of their intended audience and that could harm them in the long hall. But seeing as this is just a small segment you could say that they are appealing to the hearts of the people.

THE MAN WHO SQUEEZES MUSCLES: SEARCHING FOR PURPLE AKI

Screen Shot 2018-02-07 at 18.54.27.png

The Man who squeezes muscle is an extremely intense documentary that follows a young presenter as he seeks to find out about the tail of the mysterious Purple Aki (real name Akinwale Arobieke) that walks around the streets of Merseyside (Liverpool) looking for men with muscles to harass. Through the documentary we see the public’s reaction to the name and also hear some traumatic stories from people who have had said to have crossed paths with him (LetterBoxD, 2016). This documentary is aired on BBC iPlayer and that comes with a target audience of ages between 16-34 (BBC Three Trust, 2013), having it online is one way to connect with this age group but the way that they make it so engaging and entertaining for the audience is another. At the beginning when watching it you get the feeling of is this man real or are they just making it up, they do this by talking to the general public about their thoughts and they seem a little like they are making it up. However, then they start to go to different houses and talk to people who have experiences he strange ways and that is when it becomes real to the audience (BBC News, 2017).

When watching this documentary it gradually gets darker and darker the more that you watch it, the way it ends by telling the audience that we have been set out free in the world and didn’t really face much time in prison for the things that he has done, I feel gives out the wrong message that people can get away with the things that he has done (MailOnline, 2016).

iPlayer has come out with a lot of documentaries over its time from moving from BBC Three to online, I had a look to see if there where anything similar to this documentary and the one name that stood out has to be the documentaries that are presented by Stacey Dooley. The way that she is able to go into places with no fear for herself and come out with such brilliant entertainment is impressive, similar to this she takes different stories and tries to get underneath them and see if they are true or not (The Debrief, 2017).
